just made an account to say that the thing about ballet being able to exhibit a dancer’s athleticism and artistry better than contemporary is a HOT take. i can see in some ways how the athleticism is a stronger point in ballet in general (though if you have the chance to take class from Ming here in the contemp department you’d see where i’m coming from lol) but i’m curious about the artistry thing. in my head at least, it feels like ballet dancers train to perform a more narrow range of movements which (in my opinion!!) limit the expression of your dancing. with little to no rules on the shapes, textures, and actions we do in contemporary, there is more freedom to fill the dancing with naturalistic human vitality and express something more personal. this is just my opinions ..after all, Misha says ballet is a science and i’m more of an english typa guy. -camryn
No I totally agree, I think I’m saying that I seek out works that combine that athleticism and artistry, not that ballet is more artistic and athletic than modern dance. I feel like the notion is often that you have to sacrifice one for the other so I like to see things that make the most artistically out of something more rigid like ballet technique. I totally agree with the idea that ballet is more of a science I just personally like to see when choreographers push artistry within kind of a loose restraint of ballet technique. Also full disclosure I think ballet is just something I understand more (and appreciate differently) so I can kind of connect with the type of athleticism required a bit better.
